What can we treat with SLIT?
Based on your skin testing results, we can formulate mixture that include allergens such as: trees, grasses, weeds including ragweed, pets like cats and dogs, molds, dust mites, feathers, and other pets.
Who can benefit from SLIT?
SLIT is appropriate of children and adults who have allergies including allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis (eczema) based on skin testing results.
Based on your overall medical history, we will be able to determine if SLIT course of treatment is appropriate.
How do I take SLIT drops?
SLIT drops are take once or twice a day under your tongue for two minutes. SLIT drops taste sweet because they contain glycerin.
Similar to allergy injections, there is escalation buildup and maintenance phase.
You will continually followup with us to assess and adjust dosing as needed.
How long does SLIT take to work?
It can take 4-6 months as directed to see an improvement with your allergy symptoms.
To build a long lasting effect, SLIT drops needs to be taken as directed for three to five years.
Common SLIT side effects?
Moderate side effects have been detected for in one to 10000 cases. They include: lip mouth tongue irritation, nausea vomiting abdominal cramps or diarrhea, itching or redness of the eyes, nasal symptoms, increased asthma symptoms, or skin reactions like hives/itching/swelling. Some patients can develop eosinophilic esophagitis, condition that can prompt heartburn or difficult swallowing.
How much allergy drops cost?
Currently SLIT allergy drops are not approved by FDA, thus insurances do not cover the cost of the treatment. In addition to obtaining drops, you will need followup visits with physician. Some may be able to use their HSA plan to cover the cost of the SLIT drops.
It is important to understand this financial commitment before starting use of allergy drops — the full course of treatment often lasts three to five years.
